In the vibrant city of Hangzhou, China, history was made between September 23 - October 8, 2023, during the 19th Asian Games. This continental multi-sport occasion not only celebrated the athletic prowess of nations as well as marked the 110th anniversary starting from the inception of the first continental occasion, the 1913 Far Eastern Championship Games were hosted with magnificence and passion. The 2022 Asian Games left a memorable mark on the sporting world, showcasing remarkable achievements, unity, and the unwavering spirit of competition.

Leading the chart was the host nation, the People's Republic of China (CHN), with 201 Gold, 111 Silver, and 71 Bronze medals, totalling 383 medals. Japan (JPN) and the Republic of Korea (KOR) secured the second and third positions with 188 and 190 medals respectively, showcasing the fierce rivalry and sportsmanship prevalent in the region.


Notable Achievements

India (IND) emerged as a powerhouse, clinching 107 medals, including 28 Gold, 38 Silver, and 41 Bronze, a testament to the country's growing prominence in the sporting arena. Uzbekistan (UZB), Chinese Taipei (TPE), and the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) also showcased their mettle, earning 71, 67, and 54 medals respectively. These accomplishments highlighted the depth of talent present in various disciplines across Asia.

India's Achievements 

India's extraordinary performance at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou made history, as the nation achieved an unprecedented milestone by securing a total of 107 medals, including 28 golds. This remarkable achievement marked India's first-ever tally of over 100 medals at the Asian Games, positioning the country at the 4th spot in the overall medal tally behind China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.

In a groundbreaking victory, the Indian women's kabaddi team clinched the gold medal in the women's event on October 7th, paving the way for India's success at the Games. The Indian contingent displayed outstanding performance, amassing a total of 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze medals across various sports disciplines.


Notably, India excelled in shooting, surpassing their previous best of 14 medals achieved in Doha 2006 by securing 22 medals, including 12 in team events. The men's and women's cricket and kabaddi teams showcased their prowess by winning double gold medals in their respective categories.


India's dominance in compound archery was evident as the nation won all five gold medals, with athletes Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale achieving a rare treble. This success has bolstered compound archery's bid for a permanent place in the Olympic program leading up to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.


In badminton, the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty secured India's maiden gold medal in the men's doubles final. The Indian badminton squad's overall performance earned them three medals, marking their second-best showing at the Games.


Several of these medal-winning athletes have not only brought glory to India but also secured berths for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Indian men's hockey team clinched a gold medal, while boxers Nikhat Zareen, Parveen, Preeti, and Lovlina earned bronze medals, ensuring their participation in the upcoming marquee event in Paris.
